PERFORMANCE RE-IMAGINED:

Exhibited at Beijing Design Week 2012

PERFORMANCE RE-IMAGINED: Is a series of investigations questioning what
constitutes performance of the modern age.  Who is the performer, and what is
performed? Who is voyeur what is their role in performance?  Can a singular volume
adapt to alternate performances?  These inquiries challenge the architectural paradigm
of performance space.

Parametric utilities allow for the rapid modification of architectural language, thus
allowing Designers to test geometrically diverse situations and cyclically design both
‘per-form’ and ‘per-formance’.  Differentiated geometries can evoke a multitude of
sensations, paired with distinct color variants while minimizing design variables,
created exponential varieties of environments tested.  Here are three.

Situated between the 16th, the 17th and the 8th district in Vienna, the plot is located next to one of the main traffic axis, the Guerte in proximity to the city center with its historical buildings and attractions.

The situation today is that the whole plot is empty and leaves a hole in the urban fabric.
The block is not closed, the empty gap is now used for parking and is a waste of precious space within the city context.
It has an outstanding value and must be reactivated.

The first measure to be taken is the widening of the inner courtyard by slicing the existing buildings,
to create a spacious yard that allows public use and increases daylight exposure to the apartments.

By expanding the given roof shape and twisting it around the center until reaching the maximum allowed building height,
we created a volume that extends the given geometry and context with maximized usage of allowed building height.
A gap between existing and new building mass allows access to the inner courtyard that also provides the entrances to the apartments.
On the first two floors a public square will be created that invites the public to different activities such as eating, shopping, etc.
It stimulates the exchange and communication between the residents and will give the area a more personal feel.

The apartments are accessible through connecting hallways that are located on the northern facade.
By this circulation method we provide maximum space for the apartments with a maximized exploitation to daylight.
All apartments are duplex with partly double height rooms that create spacious, light flooded living spaces.
The surrounding buildings are in average not higher than six stories, only on this plot a maximum building height of 41 meters is allowed.
This provides the upper apartments with an extraordinary view over whole Vienna and even farther.

The project aims to be landmark for new impulses to urban development in Vienna. The mostly historical urban fabric
of the city leaves little space for new urban developments in large scale. By creating intelligent designed buildings on important acupuncture points
within the urban fabric we believe that discussions about new possibilities for redensifying the city can be triggered.

>>How to create a space that is SYMBOLIC enough to represent a knowledge city centre, ATTRACTIVE enough to attract visitors, OPEN to both the public and the content producers? A space that STIMULATES COMMUNICATION, KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE, LEARNING and RECREATION?<<

The IDEA is to create an platform to connect the dynamic and creative KNOWLEDGE scene in shanghai with the PUBLIC. a platform for LEARNING, WORKING, EXCHANGE, RECREATION and ENTERNAINMENT. the VISION is to create a FLOATING SPACE with no boundaries to maximise the INTERACTION between the different functions.
boundaries like INSIDE/OUTSIDE, boundaries between different functions shall be newly interpreted or vanish completely.
The five main parts of the complex will be the SCIENCE CENTRE, the MEDIA LIBRARY, the CONFERENCE CENTER and the RECREATIONAL SPACES and the EXPERIENCE CENTER.
The science centre is defines the core function of the building, a space to transport knowledge in an entertaining way for visitors off all age. knowledge will be much better memorized if it is connected to personal experience. the media library marks the KNOWLEDGE RECOURSE, accessable for everyone. the main part of the informations will be accessable as MULTIMEDIA data, visible through a PORTABLE DEVICE. the conference centre shall allow people to MEET and EXCHANGE their knowledge directly to a BROAD PUBLIC. the recreational space invites the public to
RELAX in an CONTEMPLATING ENVIRONMENT. it can be used by the many creatice working people around as a place to meet druing brakes or to work outside the office. EXTERIOR STAGES and AUDITORIUMS will be provided to allow diverse activities outdoors, as well as restaurants, cafes and shops for the nessecities of daily live.
The creative knowledge city around the tongji area is laking a CENTRE POINT, a LANDMARK that
creates an IDENTITY. a CONNECTION between KNOWLEDGE and PUBLIC is needed. we choose
this site next to the campus because it has HIGH POTENTIAL and a increase of urban quality of
this area is urgently needed, a landmark that defines the CENTRE of the KNWOLEDGE CITY.

How to deal with a site that is narrow, left over and abandoned, yet with high potential? How to make the given difficulties and advantage?
What functions are needed, how can we create a building that is a benefit for the neighbourhood, that fits in gently and strenghtens the identity of the whole area?
Diverse functions reflect the diversity of the area, of each individual, directly or indirectly related to the usage of this building. The volume envelope is defined by its context, the adjacent buildings and gaps, roof lines and heights. The interior program is defined by the implimentation of the areas retail, living, recreation/play and since there is a strong need for kindergardens, the social facility should be a kids house.
The locations of those areas follow the needs to stengthen each component, to optimize its usability and quality. Directly accesable from the streetlevel are the retail areas, the pars and the semi-public first floor of the kindergarden. Above the retails area, the apartmenst are stacked. By lifting them up, we can locate them closer towards the non-shaded area, away from the busy street.
The kids house is based on a classical kindergarden layout, but according to the narrow plot and urban condition, its functions are stacked on each other, following an order from semi public to private and contemplating spaces. The connection stairs and ramps are a main feature of the kindergarden, the allow the children to expreience a spacious and exciting play area where the children meet and play together, using the slides or platforms to whatever they immagine.
The Apartments are facing north-south and created as open as possible. Some walls can me moved which allows the romm setup to be altered according to the changing needs of modern families, couples or single households.
The first level of apartments are single-storey units for the elderly with a short access to the lift and staircases. Connectinng corridors on the north facade allow access to the units. Further up, the apartments are duplex or triplex units with double height spaces, galleries and huge openings that creat light flooded apartments, each unit different like the individuals living in them.

By extruding the footprint, a long and narrow volume is created. The volume gets manipulated by the adjacent sloping roofs and street corridors, cutting the volume to fit into the context. These cuts allow an increase of sun exploitation and roof balconies. The main entrances to both building volumes is located in the gap. From there people can access the apartments and the kindetrgarden. Two more entrances are locate on both ends of the volume. They allow access to the shops and to the groundlevel / playground area. Access corridors is located on the north facade. It connects the apartments with a minimal usage of space. A corridor is needed on every second fl oor because of the duplex layout of the apartments. They conect to the corridor on one fl oor, the other is fl oating through the building from north to south in an open layout. This creates light fl ooded apartments with double floor height in  some parts.
